  CHARACTER

Eckerd College is a residential, independent, four-year, coeducational, liberal arts college related by covenant to the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).

The school was founded in 1958 as Florida Presbyterian College and admitted its first students in 1960. In 1972, the College's name was changed to honor Jack M. Eckerd, a prominent Florida civic leader and businessman whose gifts and commitments to the institution have helped to insure its continuing excellence. More than 11,000 graduates are seeking to lead lives of leadership and service in communities throughout the world.

The mission of Eckerd College is to aid the personal development of humane and competent persons of all ages to learn, lead, and serve in the local, national, and even international realms of a pluralistic and increasingly complex society. In so doing, Eckerd College has as its ultimate aim to assist persons to fulfill their God-given potential, to improve the quality of life in our society at large and, more specifically, to contribute to the vitality of congregations which are local expressions of the Christian Church.

Tampa Bay/St. Petersburg (pop. 3.5 million) is a thriving metropolitan region in the nation's fourth largest state with shopping and dining of every kind, major league sports teams (including the 2003 Super Bowl Champion Buccaneers, 2004 Stanley Cup Champion Lightning, and an active spring training baseball scene), plus beaches, theme parks, and areas of natural beauty that make it one of the most visited tourist destinations in the country.
